A weekend in the 305
Updated: Jun 4, 2024
Drew has won the lucky award of getting to be featured on the blog for a second time. To cap off spring break I hopped in the car and headed south on 75 to Miami. I was not thrilled about having to take the four hour drive, which was stretched to four and a half hours due to Alligator Alley being shut down to one lane for a portion of it.
Once I finally arrived, we started the weekend off hot by heading north to the Hard Rock Casino. This was my first time in a casino, and it may have to be my last. The hotel attached is an awesome design and shaped like a guitar. Upon walking in, you are greeted by a very cool waterfall paired with lights and a fountain below. After getting a tour of the casino, I decided to test my luck at the blackjack tables. After saying "hit" numerous times and seeing the dealer have 21 every other hand, I was left with zero chips. Following that, I got up from the table and took the walk of shame leaving the casino. We whipped the car to Shake Shack, where two double patty burgers helped calm the feelings of defeat.
To cap off the first night, we headed to Brickell (a neighborhood in Miami). We started the night at Sugar, which is a rooftop bar/restaurant. The views were great, and gave me a cool perspective on Brickell and the surrounding Miami neighborhoods. A great spot to take a date if you have a high bankroll. After one fruity overpriced drink, we headed to The Wharf, which is an outdoor hang out spot right on the river. The Wharf consisted of us killing people in bags, and kicking ourselves for not betting money on the games... because we would have made a pretty penny.
Saturday began at Bal Harbour shops, an extremely lavish mall. This was quite a motivating excursion due to all of the exotic cars seen there. From Lambos, to Ferraris, to Rolls Royces, to Mclarens, to a freaking Bugatti, I've never seen so much money in a parking lot. I hope to be a regular at the shops valeting my Rolls Royce Cullinan in a few years...
Following that, we dipped in the hot tub and pool for a bit, then headed out to start the night. The night began at Bodega, where I ate the best chicken burrito I have ever had.
It was legit. My mouth is watering thinking about it. In the back of Bodega is a mini bar/club where we hung out for a bit. After that, we headed to Sandbar for an appetizer and watched the World Baseball Classic and saw the US beat the UK. After some frozen mozzarella sticks from what had to be Walmart, we hopped in the Uber and headed to LIV. A nightclub in Miami Beach at the Fontainebleau Hotel. At LIV we saw the DJs Two Friends perform, made famous from their "Big Bootie Mixes." Those guys are wizards when it comes to mixing music and are great at what they do. DJing is something I have always wanted to take a stab at, and this duo sparked that interest even more. 2 A.M. suddenly became 3 A.M. due to daylight savings, and we spent the rest of the night listening to some awesome mixes. We were back in the Uber around 4:30, and hit the hay as soon as we got back.
This was my first time in the 305 being 21, and I have to admit, I have a new respect for Miami. A playground for the rich, and a city that does not sleep. I really enjoyed this weekend and am looking forward to going back. Driving back to Tampa on a Sunday afternoon was a breeze and I did it under four hours. Until we meet again Miami, you were good to me.
Hey Connor, this was a very well-written blog. I have never been to Miami, but am planning on visiting in the summer with a few friends. I appreciate you highlighting the best places to go around the city as I will take those suggestions. Thank you for sharing - Matt P
